WHILE many will be focused on the Irish men’s rugby team in Cardiff, a different kind of performance will take place in Limerick.

A unique experience for both adults and children will take place at the TUS Millennium Theatre as a children’s opera will be the first full production staged by the Limerick Opera Festival.

On February 4, staff and students of Limerick School of Music will collaborate with Limerick Opera Festival, to perform Lily’s Labyrinth.

With music composed by Marian Ingoldsby and libretto written by Ben Hennessy, the opera will be performed by children.

As the Limerick Opera Festival has completed its first year of events, they were keen to broaden up what they present to the public – and now intend to include events for young children.

Maria Donoghue, who is part of the Limerick Opera Festival Committee, commented: “We are very closely linked to the Limerick School of Music. And when I approached the principal, she proposed putting on a children's opera.

“The opera is intended for children’s performance, so it’s quite unique in that respect. We have a lot of very expert hands on deck,” she added.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our young students to perform such an imaginative piece of music by an Irish composer in a fully staged production,” concluded Limerick School of Music Principal, Cecilia Madden.
