A NEW HOUSING estate being developed in a Limerick town is to be a welcome addition to the community amidst the rising cost of building.

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) has confirmed the plans to build the housing estate in Newcastle West.

The planning process to develop the site, which is located beside the existing Sycamore Crescent housing estate, is now underway.

If approved by elected members, the proposed development will be completed in two phases.

Phase one will see the provision of 21 residential units comprised of two-storey and three-storey dormer buildings, with a unit mix comprised of six, one-bed units, six, two-bed units, six, three-bed units and three, four-bed units.

Phase two will involve the provision of ten residential units comprised of single-storey and two-storey buildings, with a unit mix comprised of four, one-bed units and six, two-bed units.

Fine Gael councillor for Newcastle West Tom Ruddle believes the new housing development will be a welcome addition to the local community.

“Anything that brings more homes into the area has to be positive,” Cllr Ruddle said.

“It’s great to see smaller units being built in the estate as well so it won’t just be for families. People on their own or with one other person will be able to benefit as well,” Cllr Ruddle added.

The development will also see a new road connecting the existing Sycamore Crescent estate with the proposed development.

“What we really need in this town though is an affordable housing scheme for young people. It’s very hard for two people to get a mortgage under the current cost of housing,” Cllr Ruddle mentioned.
