Horror weekend on Irish roads as four are killed in road crashes including teenage girl
Gardaí have confirmed details of three fatal incidents across an eight-hour period on Irish roads on Saturday.
The latest fatal incident to be confirmed was the death of a 16-year-old girl in Co Meath after she was struck by a car while walking on the Slane Road (N51) in Navan, Co Meath.
Gardaí said the incident occurred at approximately 8:20pm on Saturday evening. Emergency services responded to the incident. They confirmed the car involved failed to remain at the scene.
"The pedestrian, a 16-year-old female, was treated at the scene before being transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where she was later pronounced deceased," a statement said.
Gardaí also confirmed that a man in his 20s has subsequently been arrested in connection with the investigation and a car has been seized for technical and forensic examination.
"He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region," a Garda spokesperson said.

"The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The scene remains preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are in place.
"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. Road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area between 8:00pm and 8:45pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on 046 9036100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station," a statement concluded.
Earlier on Saturday at around 12 noon, two people died when the car they were travelling in collided with a van on the Tramore Road (R675) at Robin Hill, Tramore, Co. Waterford.
"The occupants of the car, a man and a woman, both in their 40s, were pronounced deceased at the scene," gardaí confirmed.
Their statement continued: "Their remains have been removed to University Hospital Waterford where post-mortem examinations will take place in due course. The Coroner has been notified.
"The occupants of the van, a man (50s) and a juvenile male, were taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening.
"Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene and the road has been reopened.
"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.
"Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 11.45am and 12.15pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Tramore Garda Station on (051) 391620, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
Also on Saturday, a woman in her 80s died after a single-vehicle crash in Co Galway.
"At around 8:15pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision at Rooaun, Eyrecourt, Co. Galway," a statement confirmed.
The driver and sole occupant of the car, a woman in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. Her body was brought to the mortuary at Portiuncula Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
The scene remains preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this collision to come forward.
"Anyone who was travelling in the area between 7:30pm and 8:30pm and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) is asked to make that footage available to investigating Gardaí.
"Gardaí can be contacted at Loughrea Garda Station on 091 842870, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
"Investigations are ongoing," they said in a statement.
