ALERT: Irish tourists warned not to swim at popular beach amid 'elevated levels of bacteria'

The bathing prohibition was introduced at approximately 11am today, Wednesday, July 16

A warning has been issued urging swimmers to avoid the much-loved Lahinch beach, located in County Clare, after tests showed elevated levels of bacteria in the water.
The bathing prohibition (which is widely known as a 'do not swim' notice) was introduced at approximately 11am today, Wednesday, July 16 by Clare County Council following advice from the HSE.
It is not yet known when the order will be lifted.
A red flag has been raised at the beach, indicating the bathing prohibition in the area and will stay in place until further notice.
A spokesperson for the council commented: "The restriction has been introduced after the results of routine bathing water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria. Run-off from the catchment after exceptionally heavy rainfall is a likely cause of the elevated levels of bacteria in the water."
In accordance with An Taisce’s blue flag programme, the blue flag at this bathing area will be removed until the water quality improves.
