A man, aged in his late 30s, is being treated at Cork University Hospital following the collision close to Bantry in west Cork

A man is being treated in hospital after he sustained serious injuries in a road crash in west Cork overnight.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the collision which occurred in the townland of Donemark, Bantry in the early hours of this Saturday.

"Gardaí and emergency services responded to the collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian shortly after 3am. The male pedestrian, aged in his late 30s was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries," said a garda spokesperson.

"The male driver of the vehicle, aged in his 20s, did not require medical attention and there were no other injuries reported," they added.

Gardai say the road where the incident occurred was closed for a time to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to conduct an examination of the scene. The scene has since been completed and the road has now reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward and any road users who may have camera footage, and who were travelling in the area between 2.30am and 3am, are asked to make this footage available.

Investigations are ongoing.
