Irish public reeling as Micheál Martin laughs President Trump at housing crisis

Trump and the Taoiseach's meeting

The Irish public are still reeling from yesterday's exchange between Taoiseach Micheál Martin and US President Trump during the annual St. Patrick's Day visit where the two men appeared to laugh and joke about the Irish housing crisis.

The exchange took place when President Trump was asked by a member of the press a question regarding how the State could build tens of thousands of houses during the ongoing house crisis.

President Trump's response was to say that the housing crisis was a sign that Ireland is "doing so well" that there was such a high demand for homes while Micheál Martin laughed.

The Irish public have expressed anger and frustration at the Taoiseach's response with many pointing out that tens of thousands of people are currently homeless in Ireland, rents are increasing while the number of rental properties decreases and most young people in Ireland do not believe they will ever be able to afford a mortgage.

One person posted to Twitter/X: "micheál martin is a disgrace to this country and the whole of ff/fg should be treated the same DISGUSTING words spoken with trump"

Paul Murphy of People Before Profit posted: "Micheál Martin is pathetic. Joking with Trump about the housing catastrophe. Trump is a billionaire real estate tycoon - no wonder he thinks the Irish housing crisis is a good thing. It's exactly the sort of thing he profits from. Make them ashamed again!"

Another person posted: "I don't think Micheál Martin was actually grovelling or being insincere when he agreed with Trump's remark that Ireland's housing crisis was simply a symptom of success. Everything his party has done has indicated that 'crisis' is in fact policy, that housing is approached above"

Another person said: "Micheál Martin laughing sycophantically with Trump over our housing crisis shouldn't come as a shock to anyone who has been paying attention. The evidence FFG don't give a shite about the housing crisis has been plain to see for a long time now. They. Don't. Care. About. You."
