A community in West Belfast has been left in mourning following the news of the tragic and sudden death of a young child.
Police are continuing to investigate the sudden death of the child at a property on Springfield Road in west Belfast on Thursday.
"Police continue to investigate the sudden death of a child at a property on Springfield Road, West Belfast on Thursday, 10th October," a PSNI representative confirmed in a statement.
"A post-mortem examination has now concluded and our enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing".
The Belfast Telegraph reported that the child was involved in an incident involving a large kitchen appliance.
According to the Telegraph, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said they received a 999 call at 11.02am on Thursday following reports of an incident in the Springfield Road area.
NIAS dispatched two emergency ambulances, an ambulance officer and medics from the helicopter emergency medical service were also tasked to the incident by road.
“Following initial assessment and treatment at scene, one patient was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children by ambulance,” a NIAS spokesperson said.
The young boy is believed to have been pronounced dead later in hospital.
Tributes have been paid online following the news, with one Newry community account saying "our hearts are broken for the child and for yous, it has taken us since yesterday evening to be able to find any words to offer you".
"We are so very saddened for your loss and the pain you are all going through," the community tribute added.
A local SDLP Councillor and community activist Paul Doherty also added his condolences, saying that the death was "really tragic news".
"This is every parents worst nightmare. The thoughts of the whole community are with the family at this very difficult time," Doherty added.
