Tributes have been paid to a well-known horse breeder who died in a fatal Roscommon crash on Monday.

The victim has been named locally as Tom Mulhern, 74, from Ardcarne, Cootehall, Boyle, Co Roscommon.

Tom was said to be a well-known horse trainer, and owned the highly successful horse Ardcarne Boy. It is believed he was on his way to racing in Roscommon when the accident occurred near his home.

He tragically passed in Sligo University Hospital from the injuries he sustained when his jeep was in a collision with a car on the N4 near Ardcarne, Co Roscommon on Monday September 30 at 1.20pm.

Paying tribute, local Fianna Fáil councillor Sean Moylan said: ‘’In light of all the tragedies that have happened on the roads in the West of Ireland this is very sad.

"Tom was a very well-known man in this area. He was a good horsey man and as far as I know he was on his way to the races when this accident occurred.

"He bred a great horse out there in Ardcarne called ‘Ardcarne Boy’ who was a stallion that was known far and wide. People came from all over to get the horse to cover their mares.

"He lived on his own as far as I know and had previously worked for An Post and was very well-liked within the company."

A woman in her 40s was also rushed to hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the crash.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a serious road traffic collision that occurred at Ardcarne, Boyle, Co. Roscommon on Monday 30th September 2024.

At approximately 1.20pm Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a collision involving a car and a jeep on the N4 at Ardcarne. ”

Gardaí are again asking for anyone with information regarding the crash to come forward. They are particularly asking any road users or pedestrians with camera footage to make themselves known.

They added: “Gardaí are renewing their appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.”
