Gardaí unsure when dead man's car left Westmeath road and appeal for witnesses

Gardaí do not know how long a deceased man was in a ditch following a road crash and have appealed to the public to help them with their investigations.

The victim of this crash has been named as 47-year-old Marcin Nowosielski.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that yesterday, 2nd July 2024, at approximately 6:40 pm, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a vehicle found in a ditch on the roadside of the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard.

"Upon examination of the vehicle, a male, Marcin Nowosielski, 47 years old, was discovered deceased in the driver’s seat. A post-mortem will be conducted on the deceased," the spokesperson said.

"It is currently unclear exactly when the car left the road, but it is believed to have occurred in the previous days. The last sighting of Marcin Nowosielski was in the early hours of Sunday, 30th June 2024," they added.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information on the movements of Marcin Nowosielski or his car, a black Nissan Almera with registration 02 CE 3568, since the early hours of 30th June 2024, to come forward.

Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who were on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, between the early hours of Sunday, 30th June, and Tuesday, 2nd July, to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000.

Anyone with information on any of these incidents can also contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Superintendent Liam Geraghty, Garda Press Officer, said: "Recent incidents on our roads once again tragically illustrate the dangers that can affect any of us. No one sets out with the intention of causing or being involved in a traffic collision, especially one that results in fatalities. We often take using our roads as a routine activity, yet it remains the most hazardous task we engage in daily.

"An Garda Síochána extends its deepest sympathies to all families mourning the loss of loved ones due to road traffic collisions.

"An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users—no matter how you use the road—to exercise extreme caution and stay safe. In particular, we urge all drivers to please slow down and protect everyone on our roads".

A man in his 80s also lost is life nearby in a separate road crash, which also left the female driver in a critical condition in hospital.

This was as a result of two-car road traffic collision on the R394, Gartlandstown, Mullingar to Castlepollard road in the early hours of July 3.

At the scene, the passenger in one vehicle, a male in his 80s, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The driver of that vehicle, a female in her 60s, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where she continues to receive medical treatment in critical condition.

The driver of the second car, a male in his 30s, and the passenger, a male in his 20s, were taken to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar for treatment of less serious injuries.
