Gardaí are investigating an alleged theft of jewellery valued at €80,000 on a bus amid fears that pickpockets are targeting passengers.
It has been reported that the elderly man had the jewellery, two diamond rings, in envelopes which were stolen on Dublin Bus.
"Gardaí have received a report of an alleged incident of theft in Dublin City on the 9th of May 2024," a garda spokesperson confirmed.
"Enquiries are ongoing," they said.
The Irish Mirror has reported that pickpockets have been targeting customers on Dublin Bus.
Bus drivers described how they have reported a gang of female pickpockets, who usually get onto their buses from Dublin’s Dorset Street. They say the group is still getting away with it.
In the incident involving the diamond rings, a woman is understood to virtually have fallen on the elderly man while he was standing, after he boarded at D'Olier Street. The missing jewellery was reported to the bus driver but a thorough search failed to find anything.
The Irish Mirror reported that drivers say the same gang of pickpockets have now been identified by several of their colleagues, who still have no choice but to let them on board.
