Commuters have been slammed online for complaining about traffic delays after yesterday's (May 17) crash on the M50.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a fatal road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a lorry on the M50 in west Dublin shortly after 10.15am.
The motorcyclist - a man aged in his 40s - was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the lorry (50s) was taken to hospital for assessment.
Motorists experienced long traffic delays around the area of the collision - which occurred on the northbound carriageway of the M50 between Junction 7 (N4 Liffey Valley) and Junction 6 (N3 Castleknock) - with some taking to social media to voice their frustration.
One social media user commented, "Worst traffic I've ever seen in Dublin or anywhere. I had to abandon the car and walk home."
Another commented, "Traffic in Dublin is the worst I've ever seen it. Took me 2.5 hours to get from Tallaght to Drimnagh. Hit a stand still and abandoned the car. Crazy bit of business!"
Another X user commented, "Two hours from the N81 exit to the N4. Absolutely ridiculous. I know there’s an incident but the priority should be to get the road open. It’s taken me less time to drive to drive from Wexford. On the road since ten. A shit show."
Another commented, "[Why] as a country are we hopeless at everything? Take photos, survey the scene, clean up and be gone. But no, Ireland has to stop traffic on the busiest road in Ireland for a whole day."
However, they were heavily criticised on platforms such as X.
An X user commented, "To all of those moaning about the M50, someone has DIED. Think of them, their family and friends. It is slightly more important than you being stuck in a traffic jam."
Another commented, "I know being stuck in traffic is shite, and the M50 most days is shite. But a person is dead and some family are going to receive the worst news of their life today."
Another comment reads, "There’s clearly been a very serious incident on the M50, details of which are still not fully known. It’s not nice to be caught in the backlog, have your weekend plans delayed etc but let’s not fill a timeline with ‘poor me’ stuff when you could be affected a lot worse."
Some motorists stuck on the motorway called out An Garda Síochána.
Other social media commentators also expressed frustration at Dublin's poor city infrastructure.
One person commented, "Today shows what an embarrassment Dublin is far worse than a few fellas getting their arse out at the portal. RIP to the motorcyclist on the M50. No qualms needing to close the road for forensics. But zero infrastructure/city planning in the county to deal with an emergency."
Another commented, "I'm afraid it's just not a credible proposition to close the M50 northbound for seven hours without having a citywide traffic management plan immediately going into action."
Many social media users offered condolences to the family of the deceased motorcyclist.
One X user commented, "Thinking of their family and friends" while another wrote, "It's very sad. People giving out about delays. At least they're getting home. Poor person is not getting home tonight. RIP."
Another comment reads, "Terrible thing. Thoughts are with the family."
