GAA community mourns loss of player who tragically died in Australia

The GAA community has paid tribute to Lorcán Branagan, who died in Australia.

Originally from Co Down, Lorcán died in “tragic circumstances” in Australia on March 24.

The senior player is to be laid to rest today, in his native Hilltown, where members of his GAA club will accompany him with a guard of honour.

On Friday, Lorcán was brought home via the Clonduff grounds to a moving tribute from all his teammates, club members and friends.

This Monday, his funeral will take place at 2pm in St John’s Church, Ballumaghery, Hilltown.

Family and friends attending the funeral have been asked to wear bright colours.

Since the tragic news broke out, tributes have been pouring in for the young man, who has been described as

His sister, Caitlin, remembered his ability to light up a room with his “infectious” laugh and admirable composure.

“It’s difficult to put into words how simply amazing Lorcán was. I truly admired him throughout my life - particularly his sense of drive, hard work and ability to light up a room with his infectious smile and laugh. Oh what I would give to hear it just one more time,” Caitlin wrote in tribute.

“It breaks my heart how you were taken in such tragic circumstances and my heart goes out to his girlfriend Shona and all our cousins who are currently out in Australia. Your strength is commendable. Lorcán truly lived his life to the fullest,” she continued.

She said Lorcán showed “incredible strength” when they lost their brother, Peárce, in 2018.

“Him and Peárce were inseparable. They had a bond that was like no other and a love for one another that was indescribable. Lorcán showed incredible strength during this time and the way he composed himself throughout was truly admirable to all. Our family feels a sense of comfort to know you are both united again,” she said.

Caitlin described her late brother, Lorcán as someone who was easy to admire.

“He was an amazing individual who had a big heart and was always there to lend a helping hand to a friend. Lorcán as many know was a phenomenal athlete who will be sorely missed by Clonduff. His devotion to Hurly and Football was tremendous - he wowed everyone by his sheer skill and dedication to his fitness. He was a player that all coaches dream of having on their team.”

Despite his young age, Lorcán had visited over 10 countries.  Since turning 18, he spent summers in China, Asia and North American. Caitlin said his last destination was Australia.

“I will forever miss you coming into my room asking ‘does this look okay?’ ‘what do you think of this outfit?’ and of course watching a haul in the middle of the kitchen of endless white T-shirts from peculiar brands but as Lorcán would have said ‘you can never have too many T-shirts.’ You were a true gentleman who was full of joy and loved everything life had to offer.  My heart hurts to know you never met Ríona in person, but I find such comfort knowing you and Peárce will be reunited together again now and look after her forever. Love you brother,” she said.

Clonduff Gac paid tribute to the young man, who was “proud to wear the yellow gold”.

“We continue to pray for Lorcán’s family: his father Tony, mother Terri, brother Padráig, sister Caitlín and her partner Lorcán, niece Ríona, girlfriend Shona and the wider Branagan & Hollywood family circle. We also think of all Lorcán’s teammates and friends both at home and in Australia at this very difficult time.

“Our club will continue to support the Branagan Family and Lorcán’s team mates and friends. We will always remember Lorcán, our senior dual player who was proud to wear the yellow gold, and did so with great distinction,” said the club.

In Australia, Lorcán had joined the club Young Ireland GAA Sydney.

“Lorcán's unexpected departure has left us all reeling with shock and profound sorrow. Since joining our club this football season, Lorcán has made an indelible impression both on and off the pitch. His talent, enthusiasm, and kindness endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” the club wrote in tribute.

“Lorcán's exceptional performance in our internal tournament, The Railway Cup, showcased his skill and unwavering commitment as a defender. Beyond his sporting abilities, Lorcán was admired for his warmth and friendly disposition, swiftly becoming a beloved figure within our club.”
