'We must pass on the costs to our customers' - Price of a pint of Guinness on the rise again

The Vintners Federation of Ireland have said Diageo is out of touch with publicans and customers

The price of a pint of Guinness, Carlsberg, Rockshore and Hop House 13 are all set to increase next month, marking the third price hike by Diageo in under two years.

The announcement was made earlier this week as Diageo sent a letter out to publicans across the country.

Pints are set to be increased by six cents and will come into effect from April 15, applying to all of the company's draught products.

The drinks giant has placed the blame on rising input costs across all of its operations in Ireland, despite the fact that inflation and energy costs have decreased in the past few months.

In a letter to Irish publicans, the company stated,

"In order to offset this, we must pass on some of this additional cost to our customers.

"As a result we are adjusting the list prices on our draught product range. This includes Guinness which will increase by the equivalent of 0.06 per pint or 5.28 euros per 50 litre keg.

"These changes will take effect from 15th of April 2024, and deliveries made on or after this date will be charged at the new prices..

"Please be reminded that the retail pricing is at your discretion, and you remain free at all times to set the price of our products.

"We remain committed to supporting your business and the wider hospitality sector and value your continued support."

The price of a pint was increased by a whopping 12 cents in February 2023 and then again by a further four cent in July 2023, much to the frustration of customers that even prompted The Vintners Federation of Ireland to say Diageo was out of touch with pubs and it's customers.

Majority of publicans will now be expected to hike their price by at least 20 cents when they take into account the six cent hike along with the recent increase in minimum wage for it's employees.
