Investigation underway following shooting incident in Limerick city

The incident happened in the early hours of this Thursday

AN INVESTIGATION is underway following a shooting incident in Limerick city in the early hours of this Thursday morning.

Gardai have confirmed they are investigating the alleged discharging of a firearm in Southill overnight.

It is believed a number of shots were fired at a house in the O'Malley Park estate.

"Gardaí in Limerick are investigating an alleged discharge of a firearm which occurred in the early hours of this morning, Thursday October 5, at O'Malley Park, Southill, Limerick," said a garda spokesperson.

The shooting incident occurred at approximately 2.15am.

"No injuries were reported. Enquiries are ongoing," said the garda spokesperson.

There have been a number of shootings in the Hyde Road area of Limerick in recent months. In July, gardai attended the scene of an explosion of a viable device that occurred at two residential properties on Hyde Road. A man received injuries to his arm.

It is understood the incidents are connected to a dispute which involves a number of families who were formerly associates and part of a notorious crime gang.

One informed source said: "It's a turf war over drugs."

Anybody who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the Southill area in the early hours of the morning, or can help gardai with their enquiries is asked to contact Roxboro Road garda station on 061 214340.
