Urgent warning over safety issue in gas hobs which could cause death or serious injury

THE COMPETITION and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued an urgent warning after a safety issue was identified with a popular brand of gas hob.

The alert relates to the gas supply elbow joint for Samsung-branded hobs which were manufactured after May 2019.

In a notice, published this Thursday, the CCPC says some of the hobs may be installed across Ireland in domestic settings and in the leisure market (holiday homes, caravans and boats).

"The gas supply elbow joint from the gas hob to the gas supply may fracture, which can cause gas to leak through the fracture. This presents a risk of burns, fire, explosion and poisoning from inhalation which could pose a risk to health, or even death," states the notice.

The CCPC says it is vitally important that consumers do not use their gas hob pending an examination. 

"The gas hobs must be urgently inspected and modified which will be conducted free of charge by a Registered Gas Installer," states the notice.
