WATCH: Garda road safety message - 'Every fatality on our roads is one too many'

Gardaí have issued a warning to road users in an attempt to curb road deaths, with 24 more people dying on Irish roads this year when compared with the same period in 2022.

"Every fatality on our roads is one too many but 2023's figures so far are especially concerning," Superintendent Tom Murphy from the Garda Roads Policing Bureau said.

So far this year, there have been 126 fatalities on Irish roads.

"This is an increase of 24 deaths when compared to the same point in 2022 and an increase of 39 on 2019 figures.
We must all take care of ourselves and one another on Irish roads," Supt Murphy said.

Gardaí have urged everyone to share the message from Supt Murphy which was posted on Garda Síochána Dublin social media accounts.

Supt Murphy said his message was for all road-users, "to take responsibility for your own actions when you are using the roadway or footpath".

"Don't be distracted by something that's going on in the vehicle," he said.
