"MY name is in the hat for the head coach role, among other fantastic coaches so we will wait and see what the club decides on that front" says Munster Rugby attack coach Mike Prendergast.
It was announced earlier this month that Prendergast would stay with the province for another two-years as the attack coach, after returning to Munster in 2022.
The Limerick side have been without a head coach since the shock departure of Graham Rowntree back in October with Head of Operations Ian Costello taking over the coaching role until the appropriate candidate is found.
Prendergast would be be a stellar candidate to take over the role after making an immediate impact upon his return to Munster and played a key role as the province played some fantastic rugby on their way to a thrilling URC title win in 2022/23.
Speaking at the Munster press conference this week, as the side gear up for their second Champions Cup game away to Castres, Prendergast touched on the head coach position and where he stands on it.
"I have envisaged being a head coach over the past number of years. I suppose the more experience you get and the more head coaches you work with you take a lot from that and it gets you thinking the longer you are in your career what direction you want to go.
"If it's now or in the future, the club will decide that. As of now I have signed up as the attack coach as it's something I love doing but I suppose time will tell. My name is in the hat for the head coach role, but there is no rushing into picking the head coach as it's a huge responsibility to get right."
