MOTORING: Ford’s Explorer EV completes 30,000km world drive

Lexie is pictured having crossed the finish line in Nice, France

FORD'S all-electric Explorer has completed a record-breaking 30,000km Drive Around the World marathon.

Adventurer Lexie Alford set the official record of being the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an electric vehicle using the Ford Explorer.

The European-built SUV can achieve a driving range of up to 602km on a single charge and is able to charge from 10-80pc in 28 minutes with fast DC charging.

The Explorer’s journey crossed six continents, drove through 27 countries and covered more than 30,000kms all on electric power alone. The journey included battling power outages in Africa, a lack of charging infrastructure in the Altacama desert of Chile, unmade roads, mountain passes and freezing conditions, proving just what is possible in an electric vehicle. Lexie crossed the finish line in Nice, France.

Explorer, due here in September, will be priced from €42,120 with Government EV subsidies applied. The SUV combines German engineering with American style.
