LIMERICK councillors have voted for a new certification scheme which it’s hoped will see the city become the most pet-friendly in Ireland.
Aontu councillor Sarah Beasley saw a motion passed at the economic committee meeting that the local authority adopts a Pets Are Welcome policy.
This would see shops asked to display a paw-print symbol, if they welcome animals onto their premises.

The motion will now go forward as a recommendation to the full council.
If it is accepted, a comprehensive list of pet friendly businesses and establishments will be listed on www.Limerick.ie.
“I am absolutely thrilled at this and would really like to thank my fellow councillors for supporting my motion. I couldn’t tell you the times I have been asked by tourists and visitors to Limerick just why it doesn’t have a pet-friendly policy, and I was at a loss to answer,” she said.
Cllr Beasley says more business owners are realising being pet-friendly is actually good for trade.
