Talented young soccer star Josh Quinlivan, who just turned 20
GARDAI are urging all motorists to “slow down and drive safely” over the Christmas and new year period in Limerick city and county so everyone gets home to their loved ones.
The appeal comes as a Christmas tragedy has befallen one Limerick family.
Prayers continued to be said for a young Limerick soccer star seriously injured in a collision on the outskirts of the city.
Josh Quinlivan, who turned 21 earlier this month, was involved in a "serious traffic incident" while travelling on an electric motorbike exactly a week ago this Monday.
Gardai said he was discovered with serious injuries on the road. It occurred on the Old Cork Road on Monday evening, December 16 at approximately 7.10pm.
Many tributes have been paid to the young man who was transferred from University Hospital Limerick to Cork University Hospital where his condition was described as critical.
Treaty United, Pike Rovers and St Joseph's were among the soccer clubs paying tribute to Josh and praying for him and his family.
He had been starring with Pike Rovers FC after he signed with the local club earlier this season.
Cllr Catherine Slattery said she was totally shocked to hear that the accident had occurred, and then that she knew the family.
“I don’t personally know Josh but I know his mam and dad and extended family. I was very upset to hear the news.
“I am thinking of his family,” said Cllr Slattery, who was speaking for many people concerned for the popular young man and his family.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the “serious road traffic incident” to come forward.
“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the area between 7.00pm and 7.30pm on Monday, December 16 and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make it available.
“Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station in Limerick city on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station,” commented a garda spokesperson.
