Public invited to comment on renovation and extension of Youth Centre in Limerick

PEOPLE of Limerick are invited to make submissions on a proposed renovation and extension of the King’s Island Youth & Community Centre in Limerick city.

Limerick City and County Council has issued a public notice outlining plans to upgrade the existing single-storey building, currently 232 square metres.

The works include adding a first floor and new roof, increasing the total internal floor area to 911 square metres. The extended centre will include a community café with, a multi-purpose sports hall, office space, and meeting and training rooms on the ground floor.

Additional office and meeting/training rooms will be provided on the first floor, along with ancillary toilet, circulation, storage, and plant areas.

Roof lights will bring natural light into key spaces. Public realm improvements at Verdant Place are proposed, with a mix of hard and soft landscaping, four car parking spaces, and a loading bay.

A new multi-use games area of 250 square metres will be provided to the north of the centre, adjoining the existing playground on St. Ita’s Street.

Screening reports confirm the development is unlikely to have significant environmental effects, and that neither a full Environmental Impact Assessment nor a full Appropriate Assessment is required.

Plans are on display, and submissions must be made to Limerick City and County Council before or on February 9, 2026, before a decision is taken.
