Plans will be finalised early next year to recognise the contributions of a number community groups, organisations and individuals across east Limerick.
At the December meeting of Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District, Cllr PJ Carey and Cllr Eddie Ryan proposed that a civic reception should be held over the coming months. Cllr Carey noted that it has been a “number of years” since a civic reception was last hosted in the district. “I have a couple of people in mind,” he commented.
Following a brief discussion, it was agreed to have a workshop with council officials and staff in early January with a view to finalising a list of potential recipients. After the cathaoirleach, Cllr Gregory Conway, suggested there could be some sort of a public text or phone-in vote, it was pointed out that there are certain guidelines that apply when it comes to who can receive civic honours.

“It can’t just be Johnny Mac down the road,” said Cllr Brigid Teefy, who welcomed the proposal to have a workshop. Once councillors agree the list of recipients, arrangements will then be made to organise the event and commemorative scrolls will be prepared to be presented on the day.
It is hoped the civic reception and presentation ceremony will take place in March or April.
