A major opportunity to enhance Askeaton’s main public green space has been outlined, with new landscape proposals linked to planned Irish Water works beside the town’s swimming pool.
Council officials briefed local representatives on proposals connected to Irish Water’s plans to construct a new pumping station and a large underground storm tank at Askeaton Park. While the essential wastewater infrastructure will require parts of the green area to be dug up during construction, it is hoped the project can deliver lasting recreational benefits for the town.
The proposals include new walking and cycling paths, upgraded boundary fencing, improved seating, additional planting and biodiversity measures to support Tidy Towns efforts. Lighting, natural play elements and future-proofing for CCTV were also highlighted following feedback from the local Town Team, which raised concerns around anti-social behaviour and poor visibility in parts of the park.

Council staff said the storm tank will be fully screened with fencing, trees and hedging to minimise its visual impact, while Irish Water has agreed to fund landscaping works up to sub-base level, with the council responsible for final surfacing.
Consultation with local groups, including the tennis club adjacent to the site, was also flagged as important to ensure works are coordinated. A planning application is expected in 2026, with construction likely to begin in late 2027.
Elected members broadly welcomed the proposals, describing the park as a key recreational space that should be developed to its full potential alongside the recently reopened swimming pool.
