Primary school pupils from across Limerick city and county were celebrating creativity, teamwork and sustainability last week as the winners of Team Limerick Clean-Up’s ‘Decorate a BIG TLC Christmas Tree’ Competition were announced.
The winners were revealed at a special awards ceremony held at the Crescent Shopping Centre. Winning teachers and classes were invited to attend the event and had the opportunity to meet Team Limerick Clean-Up co-founders JP McManus and Helen O’Donnell, along with Limerick senior hurling manager John Kiely.
The festive competition, which coincided with Team Limerick Clean-Up’s tenth anniversary, invited primary school pupils to decorate large Christmas trees using recycled and recyclable materials. The initiative aimed to encourage children to learn more about the importance of sustainability, recycling and environmental awareness, while also promoting teamwork and creativity in schools.

More than 170 Christmas trees from 59 primary schools across the county were collected as part of the competition. All of the decorated trees are now on public display in the Crescent Shopping Centre for the month of December.
Winners were selected across four categories, Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Additional Educational Needs. In the Junior category, first place went to Cloverfield National School, with Our Lady Queen of Peace School taking second place and Ardpatrick National School finishing third.
Salesian Primary School claimed first place in the Intermediate category, followed by St Fergus National School, Glin in second place and Knocklong National School in third.
In the Senior category, St Fergus National School, Glin secured first place, with St Patrick’s Girls National School in second and Bulgaden National School in third.
In the Additional Educational Needs category, first place was awarded to Gaelscoil Sheoirse Clancy’s Tír na nÓg preschool autism class. Second place went to Le Chéile National School, while a joint third place was shared by Limerick Community Special School and Scoil Iosagáin CBS Primary School.
Organisers said the competition highlighted the enthusiasm and imagination of young people across Limerick while reinforcing the message of environmental responsibility during the festive season.
