Plans are progressing to carry out a major upgrade of the community playground in Newcastle West
THE COMMUNITY playground in Newcastle West has been described as being in an “appalling condition” by elected representatives who are demanding immediate action.
At the September meeting of The Newcastle West Municipal District, Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Collins told members that the facility is “not a proper playground”. He added that it falls short of being inclusive for children of all abilities.
Cllr Collins told the meeting that families are travelling to locations outside of Newcastle West to access better equipped play areas, a situation he described as “unacceptable” for the largest county town in Limerick.
Concerns were also raised over ongoing anti-social behaviour at the playground. In response, councillors heard that the council is considering the appointment of a park ranger to tackle these issues.

An official confirmed that plans are now in motion for a significant extension and refurbishment of the facility. A consultation process is underway following the publication of a formal notice earlier this month.
As part of this process, Limerick City and County Council conducted a survey to gather feedback from members of the public on how the playground should be redeveloped. The survey closed at the end of September and a report will be prepared based on the responses and feedback received.
Limerick City and County Council says it wants to ensure the redeveloped playground is larger, better equipped, more accessible, and fully inclusive for children of all abilities. Draft plans for the Demesne in Newcastle West have already been drawn up and are available for review as part of the consultation.
The redevelopment is regarded as a key investment in the town’s future, with councillors agreeing that a modern, inclusive playground will provide long-term benefits for families and the wider community.
