Council plans sale of land in Limerick to Gas Networks Ireland

LOCAL authority bosses are planning to sell a portion of land in the car park of the Adare Heritage Centre to Gas Networks Ireland.

Council members are to be asked to approve the sale of a portion of land, measuring almost eight square metres for €1,000.

If approved, the land will transfer to Gas Networks Ireland.

The utility firm is carrying out a nationwide programme of works where its staff are replacing what are known as ‘district regulating installations’, taking them from underground to above ground.

These take the form of a fenced area containing pipework and equipment which regulates gas pressure for a specific area.

These installations are seen as crucial for managing the flow of natural gas from transmission pipelines to distribution networks that supply homes and businesses.

They ensure gas is delivered at a safe and usable pressure.

At this month’s Adare-Rathkeale district meeting, councillors were asked to take note of the proposed sale.

A decision on whether the land is sold or not is likely to be made at the next full council meeting, which takes place on Monday, September 22.

Fine Gael councillor Adam Teskey said this station was originally proposed to go into the Town Park.

“There were plenty of objections to this.

“If it’s not good enough for the Town Park, how is it good enough for the heritage centre,” the councillor asked.

He also asked if this would impact plans to upgrade Adare’s Heritage Centre.

Cllr Teskey was told by officials that the installation is proposed well away from the Adare Heritage Centre building in a “secluded” part of the car park.
