Increase in number of horses seized in Laois last year

There were 15 horses seized in Limerick in recent days

LIMERICK City and County Council are reminding the public of the legal requirements for the keeping of horses in Limerick following the seizure of 15 horses in two operations in recent days.

In collaboration with An Garda Siochana, the council impounded six horses in St Mary’s Park on Sunday night and nine horses were seized in Moyross on Monday night.

These operations were in response to a significant increase in roaming horses on the northside of the city in recent weeks. It brings the total number of horses seized in Limerick so far in 2024 to 78.

The council is reminding owners they are required to comply with all regulations to avoid penalties and the seizure of their animals. The welfare of the horses and the safety of the public are the council’s top priorities. Loose horses present a serious risk to the public, especially road users.

Limerick City and County Council enforces the Control of Horses Act, 1996 and the Limerick City and County Council (Control of Horses) Bye-Laws, 2017 in relation to the keeping of horses.

The entire functional area of Limerick city and county is a Control Area for the purposes of the Act and the related Bye-Laws.

Seized horses are detained at the pound for five days to allow horse owners to make themselves known to the council and reclaim them. If a horse is not reclaimed within five days, it will be re-homed to a horse charity.

If you believe your horse has been recently seized by the council please contact Customer Services on 061 556000. You will need to produce your Equine Identification Document (‘Horse Passport’) as proof of ownership.

Notices of horses currently detained by the council are available to view here.
