DESPITE a special meeting of Limerick City & County Council having taken place on Monday to discuss the Mayoral Programme, there was much debate by the councillors as to whether the meeting they were at should have taken place at all.

They took a vote and it was decided to reconvene the meeting at a later date to facilitate the running of more workshops on the Mayor's plans for Limerick.

Cllr Catherine Slattery proposed that the meeting be adjourned until further workshops are facilitated. Cllr Bridie Collins seconded this proposal, saying she wanted the meeting to be deferred in order to hold workshops and for the advisory and implementation committee and Limerick project 2040 delivery board to meet.

Cllr Conor Sheehan said he could understand the request for a workshop. “I think we just need to get on with this because the Budget is coming up.”

Meanwhile, Cllr Liam Galvin highlighted his concerns about the Mayoral Programme being “very ambitious.”

“There's way too many promises in my opinion but I will not be held accountable for success or failure. This is the mayor's programme and I'm asking for a briefing for each municipal district that will be two hours next week,” commented Cllr Galvin.

Cllr Stephen Keary echoed this sentiment, saying the draft programme was more like “a wish list for Christmas from Santy.”

Cllr Keary told Mayor Moran that he hadn't considered the costing implications of the document. “I do believe that this document could be redrafted and possibly a 25/30 page document would be more than adequate.”

Cllr Adam Teskey said they need to have costs associated with the building of houses.
“By God almighty, we're not going to follow the previous mistakes of the past by putting together a plan that has no cost associated with it.”

Mayor Moran said he was happy to get additional comments from workshops but didn't agree with the deferral of the meeting. “I don't think I've heard anybody actually disagree with very much in the document other than to say it's not funded.”
