SUPPORTERS, family, friends, candidates and political activists gathered at Limerick Racecourse on Sunday as the count for the local elections continued.

An army of tallymen collated the first preferences on the ballot papers as they emerged from the boxes throughout the day on Saturday.

The count proper kicked off at 6:30pm, with the opening results revealed throughout the evening.

The European ballot papers have been collected by the army and transported to Cork where counting will begin today.

Meanwhile, votes for the directly elected will be counted on Monday.
