A LIMERICK university has opened a student liaison office in Nigeria.

Officials in Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) hope the new office will provide a vital support network for students from Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries who wish to study in Ireland at one of the university’s six campuses.

The official opening ceremony of the Lagos office was attended by His Excellency Peter Ryan, Ambassador of Ireland to Nigeria.

"TUS has been working towards developing relationships with African countries for the past six years and the opening of our Student Liaison Office in Lagos is a significant step in further strengthening these bonds.

"We are committed to expanding relationships with our global partners to attract international students and researchers to TUS as well as offering international opportunities to our students, staff and researchers," said President of TUS, Professor Vincent Cunnane.

The Lagos office is the fourth Student Liaison Office for TUS International, joining existing offices in New Delhi, India, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Shanghai, China.

Donnacha McNamara, Vice President of International at TUS, emphasised the significance of the new office.

"Our goal is to provide a base for Irish students and lecturers who wish to work with African Universities and to provide support to students from Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries who wish to study in Ireland.

"We are committed to internationalisation and this new office is another step towards achieving that goal," he said, adding there are plans to develop a TUSpresence in South America and Europe.
