THERE has been widespread sadness in recent days in Limerick sporting circles and beyond with news of the passing of Gerry O'Brien, of Ardnacrusha and formerly of Sir Harry’s Mall and ESB Ardnacrusha.
A talented snooker player, the late Gerry O'Brien was a winner of a senior ranking event and played on several Irish international snooker teams down the years.
He was a shining star of snooker in the late 1970’s, through to the mid-1990’s, and greatly helped raise the standards for the sport in Limerick.
Gerry made the first centuries in competition and won many provincial and national events, including a victory over former world champion Ken Doherty. He was the first Limerick man to qualify for Irish International teams at a time when the competition for places was intense.
The late Gerry O'Brien inspired the next generation of players who all looked up to him in awe, with budding young snooker players travelling just to watch him practice.
Gerry was a winner who worked very hard at his game and won all over the city in St Mary's, St Michael's, St John's, Shannon Rowing Club, Stix, the Victoria Club and nationally all over the country wherever he played.
He was extremely popular, a gentleman to meet and mentor to many players.
All Limerick snooker and beyond are mourning this great loss. The Limerick snooker community has been paying tribute to the late Gerry O'Brien, saying words can’t really express the regard, respect, and love everyone had for him
Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Mary, who was his greatest supporter and a great friend of the Limerick snooker community, his son Ger and all his extended family and friends at this sad time.
Snooker & Billiards Ireland also extended sincere condolences to the family of Gerry O'Brien.
Reposing at Griffin's Funeral Home, John's Gate on this Friday, May 17, from 5pm to 6:30pm. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 18 in Shannon Crematorium at 11am.
