LAWSON CUP

Ballynanty Rovers 2 Newport 2
NEWPORT caused a major shock on Sunday when they knocked Ballynanty Rvs out of the Lawson Cup following a penalty shoot-out.

Balla’s love affair with the Lawson Cup is well chronicled and with their interest in the league well over, the Blues were banking on the trophy to save their season.

However, when Jay Ryan fired the visitors in front it was obvious they were in for a fight.
Darragh Rainsford levelled but before the break Ryan’s shot deflected off a defender past Stephen McNamara to restore Newport’s lead by half time.

Adrian Power levelled the game after the break and while both sides had the chance to win it, penalties were needed to decide the issue.

Seamus O’Regan’s save followed by Darren Collins’ successful kick propelled Newport into a quarter final bout with Fairview Rgs.

Played on Saturday evening, Janesboro came through a difficult assignment to take their place in the last eight.

Calum O’Connell scored early to settle the ‘Boro nerves and while the home side created plenty, they were unable to capitalise.

Jay O’Loughlin made it 2-0 on the hour mark and Alan Neill struck the third with a beauty a minute later.
