THERE is been widespread sadness in Limerick GAA circles this week at the passing of former County Board Chairman, Brendan Danaher.

The late Brendan Danaher, who was a stalwart of the Castletown-Ballyagran GAA Club as well as Limerick GAA, passed away on Monday at University Hospital Limerick.

A man of diverse interests, the late Brendan Danaher served for 18 years 1967-1985 as a member of the then Limerick County Council and was also a member and long-time chairman of Golden Vale Marts.

His abiding lifelong interest was in the G.A.A. with his club and also at county level serving both at different levels for many years. He was chairman of Castletown-Ballyagran G.A.A. for many years and the high point of his career in GAA administration came when he was elected chairman of Limerick County Board in 1995 taking over from Gerry Bennis and went on to serve in that position until 1997 when he was succeeded by Donal Fitzgibbon.

Leading the tributes this week is Limerick GAA chairman Séamus McNamara said: "On behalf of Limerick County Board I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to the Danaher family on the sad passing of Brendan.

"Brendan held the position of Limerick County Board Chairman from 1995-1997 as well as being chairman of his own Club Castletown-Ballyagran for a number of years.

"He was a member of the field committee that was involved in the purchase of the current back field in Ballyagran. He was a manager with the Castletown-Ballyagran County Junior Hurling winning team in 1986.

"His contribution to Limerick GAA cannot be understated being involved as a selector with Limerick minor and Under 21 hurling teams. He was a proud Limerick man and his commitment and dedication to his own club Castletown-Ballyagran will always be remembered.

Predeceased by his wife Kay, the former Limerick GAA Board Chairman is survived by his daughter Rosemaree, sons Ambrose and Pierse, grandchildren Brianna and Alexandra and extended family and a wide circle of freinds.

Reposing this, Wednesday, evening from 6pm at Daffy's Funeral Home, Ballyagran followed by evening prayers at 8pm.

The late Brendan Danaher's Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11am on tomorrow, Thursday, in St Michael's Church, Ballyagran followed by burial afterwards to Colmanswell Cemetery.
