LIMERICK Celtics have captures the InsureMyVan.ie U20 men's National Cup final after a thrilling 77-65 victory over Titans of Galway in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
In a nervy first-half from both sides, Celtics shot the lights out of the game in the third quarter to ensure there would be no late comeback from Titans.
Limerick Celtics got off to an electric start with four of their five starting players getting easier lay-ups within the opening three minutes to put them 8-0 ahead.
It took the first five minutes for Titans to settle into the game with Fortune Igbokwe getting two quick baskets to get his side on the scoreboard.
Titans struggled with team fouls towards the end of the first quarter, sending Celtics to the free throw line and lengthening their lead, leaving them 20-6 ahead at the end of the first.
The Galway side came out with a vengeance and opened the second quarter with scores from Declan Gbinigie and Liam Conaola to put them right back in the game.
After their incredibly fast start, Limerick Celtics struggled to make their baskets. Captain Cian Gleeson's free-throws were vital to keep Celtics in the lead at the half-time break on a scoreline of 31-28.
With the game in the balance at the beginning of the second-half, Celtics hit four three pointers one from Gleeson and three from Matthew Barry to complete turn the game in their favour.
This flow of play continued throughout this quarter with Dennis Matthews doing well in defence to get his teammates up the court on fast breaks leaving them well in-front at the end of the quarter on 54-37.
The shots kept falling for the Limerick side in the final quarter with Titans just not able to find an answer to Celtics constant attack and aggressive defence.
Celtics maintained their composure in the closing minutes of the game to win out on a scoreline of 77-65.
