Limerick's Oisin O'Callaghan claimed a terrific gold medal success in the men's downhill final at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Series in the USA on Saturday
LIMERICK'S Oisin O'Callaghan had a day to remember at the UCI Mountain Bike World Series in Snowshow on Saturday as he led home an Irish one-two in the men’s Downhill final.
Twenty year-old O’Callaghan, from Ardpatrick, won his first World Cup event at the UCI Downhill World Cup in Snowshow, USA, with a time of 3:07.624.
His compatriot Ronan Dunne came second, and American Dakotah Norton came third at the West Virginia event.
Afterwards a delighted O'Callaghan told Eurosport: "It's surreal.
"I just kept going and near the bottom, I was able to push through. There was only a small bit left, so I kept working."
On Ireland taking the first two podium spots, he said: "First time ever. Doing it for the boys at home."
In a post on Twitter, Limerick man O'Callaghan added: "Managed to ride out the storm last 18 months to get back at the sharp edge. Thanks to everyone making it possible for a kid who dreamed of these occasions and then for others to help make it possible."
With Dunne setting the time to beat in his run, 3:08.120, O'Callaghan was always going to have to produce something special and he completed the testing track in a time of 3:07.624.

O'Callaghan has been riding bikes since the age of three. He grew up in the hills of Ballyhoura and learned his craft with the help of his father, Chris, who offers a bike rental service in the area.
Winning the 2020 UCI Junior Downhill World Cup, Oisín has since moved on to compete in as an Elite, despite being much younger than the rest of the category.
