BREAKING: UL president to resign from her role

PROFESSOR Kerstin Mey will be resigning from her role as president of University of Limerick. 

The news was announced this afternoon (Friday, June 14, 2024) in a statement on behalf of University of Limerick Chancellor Brigid Laffan. 

In the statement, she said: "From 1 September 2024, Professor Mey shall be taking up a Professorship role within the University."

Professor Kerstin Mey was appointed as interim president in July 2020. 

She was officially made president of UL and formally appointed at a meeting of the university's governing authority on July 8, 2021. 

Professor Mey went on sick leave at the end of March and in April, that sick leave was extended further for another four weeks. 

Officials from the university have had various high profile appearances before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). 

These related, most recently to the purchase of student accommodation in Rhebogue for well over market value - losing €5.2 million. 

Before that, the purchase of the former Dunnes building in Limerick City came under scrutiny from the committee and management were criticised by some members of the committee for a lack of oversight. 

A number of groups, including members of UL's executive committee had previously asked Professor Mey to consider her position as president. 

A spokesperson for UL said that there "will be no further comment at this time."
