OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY
Limerick District 2 Kilkenny District 1 (aet)
LIMERICK District League have qualified for the semi finals of the Oscar Traynor Trophy after they beat their Kilkenny counterparts after extra-time in Dooradoyle.
The wind played havoc with both teams’ efforts to play anything like flowing football, reducing it at time to more like a lottery.
Limerick were in control for the most part with keeper Gary Neville hardly called upon to make a save.
Vinny Ryan put the home side ahead in the second half but a hopeful shot, caught by the wind ended in the net to send the game to extra time.
Limerick held their nerve and Adam Lipper headed late winner to avoid the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
In the opening minutes the visitors should have at least tested Neville but Lohinski blazed over from inside the box.
At the other end, Leon Daly was denied by the legs of keeper Cian Rowe and minutes later a good run by Joel Coustrain ended with Leon Daly heading back across goal but Vinny Ryan lifted his shot over the bar.
Tommy Frawley forced a good save from Rowe with a long-range effort and just before the break Coustrain put a chance on a platter for Ryan but he fired over the top.
Limerick kicked off the second half with a huge wind at their back and it took them just five minutes to break the deadlock. Tom Kidd’s throw in was flicked on by Eliah Riordan and Vinny Ryan volleyed the ball home from 12 yards.
Daly and Coustrain had great chances to increase the lead but did not finish and as luck would have it, with minutes to play the ball dropped in front of Nathan Sherry who looped effort sailed into the top corner.
Extra time followed and when it looked like we were heading for spot kicks, Limerick were awarded a corner kick. Joey Rushe’s inswinger saw Adam Lipper lose his marker to head unchallenged to the back of the net to see Limerick through.
Limerick now face a trip to take on Mayo for a place in the final. The winners of that game will play either Waterford or Wexford in the decider.

Shels responded well and were back on level terms when Brandon Scahill finished at the front post.
Timmy O’Keefe restored Town’s advantage when he finished to the bottom right but once again Shels bounced back and Alan Carr-France ensured the sides went in level at the break when he converted from a spot kick.
There was nothing to separate the sides thereafter as the sidee3s headed into extra time.
