Limerick District League junior soccer fixtures off for second successive weekend

No resolution has been found to date to the dispute between the LDL and local referees

Limerick District League fixtures off for second successive weekend

The Limerick District League has cancelled all fixtures this weekend

ALL fixtures in the Limerick District League (LDL) have been cancelled for a second successive weekend due to an on-going dispute.

The Limerick District League informed clubs of the news via an email on Wednesday evening.

Informing the clubs of the decision, the Limerick District League email read: "As there has been No Resolution between the LDL and both referees branches, the LDL have cancelled all fixtures this coming weekend."

Announcing the decision to halt games last week, the LDL said that 'over the last number of weeks there has been numerous of correspondence between the referee's societies, MFA, FAI and LDL in relation to the new demands from the referees in relation to the match day/spectator set up at some grounds with Astro pitches in the Limerick area and roping off of grass pitches.'

In a statement issued to Limerick Leader sport last week, Sean Slattery, President of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, said that over the past few weeks they had been made aware of 'some problems regarding the positioning of spectators within the confines of  some Astro pitches in Limerick'.

This was 'having an effect of match officials being able to see the full length of touchlines due to spectator encroachment'.
The statement said that following correspondence between the Irish Soccer Referees Society and the FAI, and LDL, it had  'agreed that pitches be roped off properly until a more permanent solution  can be found.'
Mr Slattery said that at no stage did their members threaten any withdrawal of services and they are available for all games at all venues.
He said that a problem arose at one venue when traffic cones were going to be roped and used as a barrier.
The decision of the league to cancel games was 'entirely their (LDLs) own choice.'
