Fixtures in the Limerick District League have been suspended with immediate effect

ALL junior fixtures in the Limerick District League have been suspended with immediate effect owing to a dispute with local referees.

The decision to halt games in the league was confirmed in an email sent to all clubs in the LDL on Wednesday evening.

A number of junior soccer fixtures, including two Premier League Fixtures, as well as an FAI Junior Cup game had been due to take place on Thursday night.

In the email sent to LDL clubs, the League said that 'over the last number of weeks there has been numerous of correspondence between the referee's societies, MFA, FAI and LDL in relation to the new demands from the referees in relation to the match day/spectator set up at some grounds with Astro pitches in the Limerick area and roping off of grass pitches.'

The email continued: 'With no resolution to date between the Referees Society, MFA, FAI and the LDL, the LDL have no choice but to Stop all Football with immediate effect from tomorrow Thursday 12.9.24, until a complete resolution is agreed between all parties.'

In a statement issued to Limerick Leader sport on Thursday, Sean Slattery, President of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, said that over the past few weeks they had been made aware of 'some problems regarding the positioning of spectators within the confines of  some Astro pitches in Limerick'.

This was 'having an effect of match officials being able to see the full length of touchlines due to spectator encroachment'.
The statement said that following correspondence between the Irish Soccer Referees Society and the FAI, and LDL, it had  'agreed that pitches be roped off properly until a more permanent solution  can be found.'
Mr Slattery said that at no stage did their members threaten any withdrawal of services and they are available for all games at all venues.
He said that a problem arose at one venue when traffic cones were going to be roped and used as a barrier.
The statement added: "Our members offered to meet the league on Tuesday night at said Astro venue to advise them on what would be acceptable and the FAI were also advised of this offer to meet the league.
"Nobody took up this offer. The decision of the league to cancel games is entirely their own choice."
