FIXTURES continue this weekend in the Lyons of Limerick County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship as Newcastle West and Garryspillane look to double their points on the board after wins in the opening round.

Newcastle West got the better of Granagh-Ballingarry with a comfortable 1-18 to 0-14 win over newly-promoted side last weekend. The winners made the most of the game's only goal to trail by just a point at the break before opening up in the final quarter with six unanswered scores as Granagh-Ballingarry's attempts at containment finally ran out of gas.

Newcastle West currently sit at the top of the premier intermediate hurling table as they face Glenroe on Sunday, August 4 in Ballyagran at 3pm. It will be all on the line for Glenroe who will play their first game of the championship on Sunday.

A win for Granagh- Ballingarry will be vital this weekend as they come up against Bruff, who will also open their championship campaign on Sunday. Both teams will be anxious for a victory in the second round of fixtures. Their game takes place this Thursday, in Ballyagran at 7pm.

Elsewhere, Garryspillane who are bidding for an immediate recovery of the senior status this year, opened up their Lyons of Limerick Premier Intermediate hurling championship campaign with nail-biting 3-16 to 2-18 victory over South Limerick neighbours Effin.

In the end, the more even spread of talent got the winners over the line but, no matter how often they looked to have moved themselves out of danger, Effin, and particularly their scoring machine Patrick O'Donovan, kept hauling them back into the game.

Garryspillane will aim to make it two wins from two this weekend as they come up against Blackrock on Saturday evening at 7pm in Killmallock.

After their defeat in the opening round Effin will face off against Na Piarsaigh in the final game of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship this weekend in Bruff on Saturday evening at 7pm. This will be Na Piarsaigh's first outing this year while Effin try to bounce back from their disappointing opening loss.
