AN INMATE in Limerick Prison passed away "suddenly" on Christmas Day, Limerick Live has learned.
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service confirmed the death of a prisoner in Limerick Prison on December 25.
"All deaths in custody are investigated by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant.
"The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s office. The next of kin have been notified," said the spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service.
The deceased has been named locally as Michael Knapp Ryan (pictured below), aged in his 30s, of St Mary's Park in Limerick city.
According to his death notice, which has been posted on rip.ie, Mr Ryan passed away "suddenly on Christmas Day".
His funeral and burial will take place on Saturday.
