In Pictures: Out & About at the inaugural Dylan McCarthy Poc Fada

A GREAT crowd turned out to work off the Christmas turkey at the inaugural Dylan McCarthy Poc Fada (long puck).

The poc fada began at 9.30am on St Stephen’s Day outside Scoil Mocheallóg in Kilmallock.

The event was in memory of Dylan McCarthy who tragically passed away following an alleged assault in Monasterevin, County Kildare earlier this year.

Kilmallock GAA chairperson Steven Connery commented during the lead-up to the poc fada: “This year we thought it fitting to honour Dylan’s memory,”

“It’s as simple as that, there was nothing complicated about it.

“In any rural club or community when you lose someone of such closeness they're going to be missed so this is our way of honouring him,” Steven mentioned.

The poc fada began outside Scoil Mocheallóg and followed a course set out up the Green Road in Kilmallock before ending at Fitzgerald’s Park.

A poc fada is a competition that sees competitors battling it out over a long course by repeatedly hitting a sliotar with a hurley as far as you can and crossing the finish line first.

“It’s a fun day out and it’s a family day out so it’s great to get back out on a St Stephen’s Day morning,” Steven added.

All funds raised by the poc fada are for Scoil Mocheallóg for the promotion of Gaelic games.

Adrian, Paudie and Gavin O’Brien were the winners of the event.
