A LIMERICK-BASED garda superintendent has vowed to use her contacts within Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in a bid to urgently reduce the speed limit on a “deadly road”.
Councilliors at a meeting of the Limerick Joint Policing Committee were informed by members of An Garda Síochána that fatal road traffic collisions in Limerick have increased by 200% this year.
"We have had 12 fatal collisions resulting in 13 deaths this year. It is a very sad and lonely place for the families and friends of those involved," Superintedent Aileen Magner said.
She noted that there have also been 52 serious injury collisions in Limerick, leaving many with life-altering injuries "that they will never recover from."
Chairperson of the JPC, Cllr Adam Teskey (FG), asked that they write to TII and the National Transport Authority concerning a stretch of road in County Limerick that has had 18 fatalities in 15 years.
"The statistics of that alone are shocking," he said, referencing a 1.5 mile stretch on the N21 at Reen's Pike, in County Limerick, which tragically claimed the life of a young mum last October.
Cllr Teskey added that the turmoil it has caused families is "heartbreaking."
He asked that councillors and members of An Garda Síochána write to TII, asking for a slipway, more lighting and an upgraded junction to be put in "as a matter of urgency."
The chairperson also asked Supt Magner for help on behalf of the Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District after a speed reduction request at Coolanoran was rejected by TII.
"You will remember in your time as superintendent in Newcastle West that it is a very dangerous area. TII would not listen,” Cllr Teskey added.
He asked that two letters be written to address issues at both Reen's Pike and Coolanoran.
Supt Magner informed members that as part of her new role at Henry Street garda station, she is responsible for the Roads Policing Units in the Limerick division, adding that the unit does have a good relationship with TII.
"We can get a representative to facilitate a meeting with TII followed by an on site visit,” she said.
