In Pictures: Limerick hit-and-run victim Megan ‘overwhelmed’ by kindness

MORE than €6,000 has been raised in just a few days for a young mother-of-two who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident in Kilmallock.

Megan Whelan, originally from Knockainey, was on a pedestrian crossing in Kilmallock on Sunday evening, December 11, when she was struck by a vehicle which then left the scene. The car was later found burnt out in nearby Tankardstown cemetery.

Her friends in the local walk and talk group set up a Go Fund Me page and organised a walk and raffle to help Megan and her family this Christmas.

Kilmallock woman Libby Maguire said everybody wanted to help by taking the stress out of Christmas at the very least for her and let her concentrate on her recovery.

Libby said there was incredible generosity from the business community in Kilmallock with over 33 raffles prizes donated totaling over €1,000.

“Her mam Grace went up and thanked everybody. She spoke about how Megan was feeling and how she is very overwhelmed by the generosity of the people from the town. Her dad Jimmy and granduncle Mick O’Gorman were there too. The family stayed on until everybody was gone and chatted to everybody,” said Libby.

A great cheer went up when Mandy Manning won one of the spot prizes because Mandy’s husband Ollie Manning was the first person to come to Megan’s aid and alert emergency services.

€1,450 was raised from the raffle, which on top of €4,795 raised on the Go Fund Me page, means Megan and family will receive a cheque for just over €6,000.

“We’re just delighted to have been able to help and take some of the stress out of Christmas and into the new year for them,” said Libby, who thanked everybody who donated prizes and money and bought raffle tickets
