Two counterfeit €50 notes were submitted as payment at a service station in Limerick at the weekend
GARDAI have issued a warning to businesses in Limerick following a number of recent incidents involving counterfeit money.
In one incident last weekend, two fake €50 notes were submitted as payment at a service station in the city.
"Staff have reported to gardai that on Saturday, December 17 at 3.25pm two women came into the shop. They purchased some items and one woman handed over two €50 notes. The staff did not realise that the notes were counterfeit and handed back change," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.
"There are scanners and pens that can check the notes to ensure that they are legal tender. I know that bankcards and tapping has replaced a lot of cash but clearly, it is still important to check notes," she added.
The warning about counterfeit notes is the second to be issued this month.
There have also been a number of incidents of 'prop' money being posted into Ireland in recent weeks.
