AN investigation is to be carried out following a large commercial fire on the outskirts of Limerick city which saw dozens of firefighters being deployed.

The blaze - at Fenton's Yard in Raheen - broke out shortly before 8pm on Tuesday and the flames and smoke could be seen across the city.

Units of Limerick Fire and Rescue from Limerick city, Foynes and Rathkeale all attended the scene, close to the Great National South Court Hotel, and the fire was brought under control before 11pm.

Emergency services remained on scene until just after 1am and personnel from Limerick Fire and Rescue will return in daylight this Wednesday to carry out a further check.

While there is nothing to suggest the fire was started maliciously, an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

There are no reports of injuries arising from the incident.

While there were some local traffic diversions in place on Tuesday night, Motorists are being advised the road is open as normal this Wednesday.
