Nigerian-based Limerick priest recalled as a ‘generous’ and ‘kind’ soul

Nigerian-based Limerick priest recalled as a ‘generous’ and ‘kind’ soul

Fr Michael Murphy was 90 years-old when he passed away in Nigeria

TRIBUTES have been paid to the longest-serving priest in the Benue state of Nigeria, Fr Michael Murphy.

Fr Murphy was born in Curraghchase, County Limerick in 1932 and ordained into the priesthood in 1960 and since then he worked all his life in Nigeria.

Warm tributes have been paid to Fr Murphy from both Irish and Nigerian people alike.

His father was the steward of Curraghchase and Fr Murphy went to school in Kilcornan.

Fr Murphy was the youngest of four brothers and two sisters and lived in the lodge at Curraghchase until he was the age of seven when his father passed away.

His cousin Ger Ward remembered him as a kind and generous man.

“He used to come home to Kilcornan from Nigeria every year and the people of the parish were very good to him.

“Every year they held an event for him with cakes and treats in the hall in Kilcornan.

“He used to collect a lot of money and get private donations here because he was involved in building schools, a few churches and medical centres in Nigeria,” Ger said.

Fr Murphy spent his early years working in agricultural machinery and his last job before he left Ireland was working in a bar in Kilkee.

When Fr Murphy was around 18 he moved to England and joined the priesthood with the Holy Ghost Fathers there when he was 21.

Fr Murphy left for Nigeria shortly after.

“He would come home to his base in England first and then he’d make the trip over to Ireland for two to three weeks and the entire community were so good to him,” Ger said.

“I’d like to thank all the people of Kilcornan and especially his friends who used to help him every year when he came home,” Ger concluded.

Fr Michael Murphy passed away at the Bishop Medical Centre in Makurdi, Nigeria on November 28, 2022.

“[Fr Michael Murphy] has touched every one of us in this church with his life,” Bishop of the Makurdi diocese in Nigeria, Wilfred Anagbe said at Fr Murphy’s funeral service.

Fr Murphy’s funeral Mass in Nigeria was streamed live and watched by over 16,000 people with the comments section flooded with warm respects.
