OVER €1.5 million has been allocated to ten community centres across Limerick it has been announced.
Grants of up to €300,000 have been handed to each of the ten community centres chosen in Limerick.
The ten community centres receiving funding are St. Munchin’s Community Centre CLG which receives €279,846.00, Murroe Wood Park CLG €206,290.71, Hope for People with Autism CLG €249,523.81, Our Lady of Lourdes Community Services Group CLG €166,253.82, St Ita’s Community Hall, Abbeyfeale €300,000.00, Rockhill Bruree Community Council CLG €92,472.89, Pallaskenry Community Council €43,210.00, Granagh Development Association, €84,052.82 Kilmallock Performing Centre CLG €94,033.35, and Dromcollogher Community Hall €21,600.00.
The funding will be used to upgrade, renovate and refurbish community centres, parish halls, scouts clubs, youth hubs, family resources centres and sports complexes across the country.
The grants are to help with works such as extensions to existing centres, energy efficiency upgrades and improved access for people with disabilities.
Announcing the overall investment Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys said: “The Community Centre is where the children go to play sport; it’s where meals are provided for our senior citizens; it’s where the local dramatic society perform; it’s where the ICA, our Men’s Sheds, Youth Clubs and other local organisation come together for their meetings and events.
“Most importantly in the month of December – the Community Centre is often the place that Santa will come to visit to meet the local children!
“It was a priority for me as Minister for Rural and Community Development to put this new funding stream in place and I am delighted to announce the successful projects today,” Minister Humphreys said.
Limerick city and Fine Gael TD Kieran O’Donnell said: “I am delighted that my colleague Minister Humphreys has made €1,537,283.40 in funding available to 10 Limerick community centres given the vital work that staff and volunteers there do and the invaluable services they provide.”
The Community Centres Investment Fund was launched by Minister Humphreys in April 2022 to support community groups with the upgrade and development of their Community Centre facilities.
Limerick county and Fine Gael TD Patrick O'Donovan also welcomed the news: “Heather is ploughing money into rural areas including Limerick and it is making a big difference to businesses, families, volunteers and individuals all over our County. We aren't talking about rural Ireland, we're delivering to it."
