Limerick man becomes the World Cup 'breadwinner' following his hilarious TV interruption

Eddie O'Keeffe as he interrupted a French news broadcast at the Qatar World Cup

A BORN and ‘bread’ Limerick man has taken the online world by storm with his hilariously timed interruption on French television.

Eddie O’Keeffe from Ardpatrick was in Qatar for the World Cup when he took the opportunity to interrupt a live French news broadcast.

“Je suis une baguette!” (I am a baguette) the Limerick man exclaimed, showing off his Leaving Certificate French skills during the three-second clip.

The video took flight on social media due to French comedian Pierre-Antoine Damecour and former footballer Gary Lineker sharing the video on Twitter.

The short clip has now amassed over four million views and has been getting great reaction amongst the Irish and French alike - even French president Emmanuel Macron liked the video!

“It’s mental, I actually don’t understand how [the video] has gone so big! It was so stupid,” Eddie told Limerick Live.

Eddie who lives and works for Amazon in Dubai took a road trip to Qatar last weekend to attend the France and Denmark match.

“There were five of us in total, we went to have the craic really,” Eddie said.

“It took us about nine hours to drive from Dubai to Qatar and the information about the rules and regulations of travelling from Dubai to Qatar wasn’t clear.

“We chanced it anyway and had to drive through the Saudi Arabian and Qatar borders. We managed to get to our destination,” he added.

Eddie said he and his friends were enjoying the atmosphere after the game when they came across a broadcast for French television.

“My friend had a foam finger and he was messing with them by doing wet willies and giving a slap across the head.

“It started from that. I saw my opportunity and went back to my Leaving Cert French and said right, what can I say here? Je suis une baguette was the first thing that came out. The timing was impeccable.

“So here we are, five days later and over four million views and it’s gone mental,” Eddie added.

Eddie is now back in Dubai and can’t comprehend how viral the video has gone.

“Everyone back home has gone nuts over it. It’s a three-second video and just because I’m in an Ireland jersey it’s gone mental.

“I’m here 3,500 miles away wondering what is going on? It’s good craic all the same. You can’t beat it,” Eddie said.
