The old post office building in Castleconnell
CASTLECONNELL Post Office will re-open in a brand new location a spokesperson for An Post has confirmed.
Controversy was caused a number of weeks ago when it was announced that the post office would close “until further notice”.
Those who availed of An Post's services in Castleconnell were advised to use the post office in Newport, County Tipperary, over seven kilometres away.
A spokesperson for An Post confirmed the re-opening of the Castleconnell Post Office: “The new post office will be located in SuperValu, Castleconnell.”
The post office is set to reopen early next year.
“In the interim customers can continue accessing services at Newport Post Office,” the spokesperson said.
Limerick city and Fianna Fáil TD Willie O’Dea commented: “This is absolutely brilliant news for the local community in Castleconnell.
"Terms were only agreed between the proprietor of SuperValu and An Post in recent days. A fit-out for the Post Office in SuperValu, Castleconnell will take place over the next number of weeks with a view to reopening the post office…” Deputy O’Dea said.
Castleconnell Post Office closed on Friday, October 21 due to the post master who had been running the Post Office for a number of months leaving the business.
An Post confirmed that Peter Cunningham has been appointed as the new post master.
"I am fully aware of how important Castleconnell Post Office is for the local community… I am delighted that the people of Castleconnell will have their own post office again in the heart of the village," Deputy O’Dea concluded.
